How to Crop a PDF and Trim Unwanted Margins

Cropping a PDF removes everything outside a selected area. It is perfect for trimming oversized scans, hiding letterheads, or focusing on a chart. idlPDF gives you a visual rectangle you can drag and resize, then applies the crop to one page or all pages.

Why use this tool

  • Strip oversized margins from scanned documents to save paper when printing.
  • Hide headers and footers before sharing internal documents.
  • Focus a reader's attention on a specific chart, table, or paragraph.
  • Make a PDF read better on small screens by removing wasted edges.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

    Open the Crop Pages tool

Drop your PDF onto the upload area. The current page appears with a crosshair cursor.

  2. 2

    Draw the crop area

Click and drag on the page to draw a rectangle around the content you want to keep. Drag the edges or corners to fine-tune the size.

  3. 3

Choose scope: this page or all pages

Toggle the "Apply to all pages" checkbox. Off = only the current page is cropped. On = the same crop region is applied to every page.

  4. 4

    Save the cropped PDF

Click Crop Now. The new PDF downloads with all content outside the rectangle removed.

Tips for best results

  • If pages have very different sizes, crop them individually rather than using Apply to all.
  • The crop is non-destructive in the sense that your original file is untouched. Only the new PDF is trimmed.
  • Combine cropping with Compress to make the result even smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping actually delete the trimmed content?

idlPDF rewrites each page so only the selected area remains, removing the surrounding pixels and text from the new file.

Can I crop different regions on different pages?

Yes. Turn off Apply to all, navigate page by page, and set a unique crop on each.

Will cropping break links or bookmarks?

Links remain on the cropped pages but if a link target falls outside the visible area, the click destination shifts to the nearest visible point.
